Digging Behind the Firewall: Social Bookmarking And the Enterprise
Since del.icio.us roared on to the scene in 2003, social bookmarking has become the rage and dozens of similar shared public bookmarking systems—Digg, Reddit, Furl, Blink, Tailrank, and many others—have attracted large and loyal followings. Some of the new contenders offer refinements of the pure bookmaking model; Digg, for example, lets users submit news stories and websites which are then promoted in prominence through a user-based ranking system.
Generally, these social bookmarking systems all work pretty much the same. Individuals create personal collections of bookmarks which can then be accessed by other users anywhere on the Web. To categorize the bookmarks and make them easily found by others, users assign keywords, called “tags,” for each bookmark. The ability to assign multiple tags overcomes the limitation of the traditional hierarchically organized folders found in most Web browsers.
